Dr. John Coughlan
General Practitioner
I graduated from The University of Otago in 1980 and subsequently obtained a Master’s in
Business from Otago and a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard University.
I was the General Manager at Christchurch Hospital then Wellington Hospital for many years until my family and I decided to settle back in Christchurch in 2004. I thoroughly missed being a GP and looked forward to joining Main North Road Medical Centre upon my return.
I have a number of special interests including minor surgery, which takes place at the practice. Each week I visit three retirement homes around the city; Lady Isaac, Middlepark and Radius Hawthorne and look after the boarder students from St Bede’s.
Outside of work I am part of The White Matter Brain Cancer Trust that was established in 2016 to help patients and families over the time of their treatment. It is rewarding to enhance the quality of life of brain cancer sufferers by providing assistance, services and experiences for them and their families.
Lastly when I am not spending time with my wife Sally and our 3 adult sons, I love a good game of golf and try to keep fit by running on a regular basis.
